They Had Metal Blinds in the Bathroom

Sunday, February 12th, 2012

I wanted to know what on earth the previous owners of our current house were thinking when they put non stainless steel Venetian Blinds in the bathroom but wooden ones in the kitchen and the bedrooms. Surely this would have worked a little better the other way around? Even if they wanted to get some blinds with a metallic look, one would have assumed that they would invest the extra £2 to get some that were stainless steel to prevent their brand new blinds rusting within a week. When we moved in, we saw little point for these blinds anyway since the window was already frosted so we took them down and threw them away. They were no good to man nor beast and I was sure no-one would buy them for parts either so it wouldn’t have been worth the ebay listing fee. The wooden blinds needed a good clean but that was all the damage there

Aiming to Produce Our Own Electricity

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Solar panelsI’d have loved to have thin film photovoltaic solar panels but sadly I had never been able to afford them until now. I had come into some money recently so I thought the best thing I could do with my money was not to spend it, but invest it. I bought some thermoplastic for the roof to insulate it a bit better and keep the heat in, and I bought some solar panels for the roof too. The thought of producing my own electricity always made me feel like I would be less of a burden to the world with my carbon footprint. I was what some of my friends would call a bit of a hippie at heart, so I wanted to do as much as I could to prevent global warming. Even if I couldn’t make everyone’s homes as energy efficient as my own, I was doing the best I could as a single person.

Has Anyone Had an Energy Audit Done?

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

With the recent hot summers and really cold winters we’ve recently experienced, I keep looking at my energy bills and thinking that I should be able to shave a few dollars off it. I’ve tried on my own to make my home more energy efficient, but I’ve been thinking of getting an energy audit done. You can hire a professional to come to your home and look into several categories of energy usage in your home. They’ll examine everything from your insulation and air filtration to possible gas leaks and your heating and cooling systems. I’ve heard that the average person can save 30% on their energy bills annually. This is not only a great way to save money, but it’s better for the environment, too. I’ve been trying to make small differences by using fluorescent light bulbs, taking shorter showers and not using as many disposable products, but I know I could do much more.

Geothermal Heating is Energy Efficient

Monday, January 9th, 2012

If you’re looking for one of the most energy-efficient ways to heat your home, you should consider a Direct Exchange Geothermal heating system. It’s possible that you’re not familiar with geothermal heating. While it is gaining popularity, it is still one of the lesser known forms of home heating. Geothermal heating uses the Earth as a heating source because the temperature of the earth stays at 65 degrees years round. Coils of pipe are installed in trenches dug below the frost line. A coolant is circulated through the pipes, then returned to a heat exchanger in the home heating system. Using a geothermal system, your only cost is electricity for operating the circulator pump and forced-air heating system. There is no need to ever buy fossil fuels. This makes a geothermal heating system highly energy-efficient, and totally non-polluting. If you’re building a new home, consider installing a geothermal heating system.

Matching a Cooker Hood to the Existing Vent

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

We had a 50cm cooker extractor but the problem was that it did not match the cooker. It all goes back to when we moved into this house – the extractor had been left behind by the previous owner as it was vented through an outside wall and we had agreed to keep the hood.

When we moved in, we inserted our own cooker into the space below the hood. Our thinking originally was that the vented hole would be awkward to find a different hood for and we had plenty of other things to get sorted when we moved in.

Once things had settled down, we set about fixing things that were plain wrong – the mismatched cooker and hood was in our top ten list.

I removed the cooker hood to find out what was required to fit the vent. The pleasant surprise was that the vent was not part of the extractor hood but formed a universal fit. That meant we could choose any venting cooker hood and it would just clip neatly over the top.

The Increasing Popularity of Laminate Flooring

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

One way to refashion the beauty of your home is by adding a new flooring that will suit the interior look of your house. If you want a flooring that is durable and very appealing, then laminate flooring would be the best option. The primary reason why people often choose this kind of flooring rather than the other types is because of its resemblance with hardwood flooring. What makes laminate flooring more preferable is that unlike hardwood flooring, laminate flooring cannot be easily scratched and stained. This typical kind of flooring can be a good substitute to natural hardwood floors. Laminate floors are made available in different colors and styles, so you have your own choice regarding this one. If you are planning to get this type of flooring, you must first decide whether you’ll choose the one with a thicker core which is sturdy, or the one with a thinner core.
